The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District recently released a request for developer proposals to begin a mixed-income revitalization of the 455-unit Southtown Court public housing site in Birmingham’s Southside neighborhood. The announcement of this RFP is key to implementing the Southside Neighborhood Plan, recently completed by Camiros in collaboration with local residents, community leaders, and HABD. We’re happy to once again be working in the City of Shreveport, Louisiana, as part of a team looking to transform the communities of Allendale and Ledbetter Heights into areas of opportunity for current and future residents. Senior Associate Adam Rosa, has been involved with community engagement efforts, and had the opportunity to outline some of the goals of our work in a short interview. Check it out here.
The team, being led by the City of Shreveport, the Shreveport Housing Authority, and Pennrose Properties, is pursuing a Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This project is one of many examples of Camiros’ involvement in Choice Neighborhoods planning. Learn more about our Choice Neighborhoods work here.
We are proud to be continuing our work in the Shreveport/Caddo Parish community, where the Draft Unified Development Code, developed by Camiros with the Shreveport/Caddo Metropolitan Planning Commission, is currently in its public review process.
We are currently working with the City of Flint, the Flint Housing Commission, and HUD to prepare a Choice Neighborhoods Plan for South Flint and the Atherton East Community.
You can read more about the project HERE.
As a part of the planning process, Camiros staff accompanied Atherton East residents and Flint officials on a trip to Indianapolis in May. We had a great time touring examples of mixed-income housing sites, and learning from local officials and residents involved in the planning, development and management of these communities.
To document this trip and share what we learned, we have produced a short video that includes footage from our various tours as well as interviews and reactions of Atherton East residents.
Enjoy!
“The Atherton East community has a bad reputation, basically. There’s just things that need to be improved. It has a lot of potential and this is a good start”
