Camiros Heading to the Mississippi-Alabama APA Conference
Camiros Principal Adam Rosa will be speaking at the upcoming Annual Conference of the Mississippi and Alabama Chapters of APA on Thursday, September 15. The session, entitled Southside Revitalizations: Planning for Mixed-Income Development in Mobile and Birmingham, will discuss efforts being undertaken by the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) and the Mobile Housing Board (MHB) to improve the Southside neighborhoods of each city though the revitalization and reinvestment in aging public housing complexes, coupled with neighborhood improvement strategies and people projects that will help to connect residents to opportunity (click HERE to view the project). Key takeaways will include:
- Helping planners recognize the unique culture and history of a changing neighborhood through out-of-the-box community engagement techniques (and lessons learned)
- Discussing how to build trust in underserved neighborhoods that have a memory of the negative effects of urban renewal in order to create positive community-based change
- Describing how to build capacity and enthusiasm among public housing residents so that they can take ownership of the plan
- Discussing how collaboration between the public housing authority, City and other key partners are essential to connecting the dots on people, housing and neighborhood strategies
